Vans first launched in 1966 in Anaheim, CA as The Van Doren Rubber Company. As an executive at one of America’s largest shoe manufacturers, Doren noticed that shoe manufacturers were making pennies per shoe sold, while retailers took home the bulk.
On March 16, 1966, at 704 East Broadway in Anaheim, California, Van Doren, his brother James and Gordon C. Lee opened the first Vans store under the name The Van Doren Rubber Company. The business manufactured shoes and sold them directly to the public.

First released in spring 2010, this Vans Sk8 Hi Standard Issue LX is based on the silhouette of the classic Sk8 Hi. The sneaker comes in a mix of canvas and suede, and the main differences from the classic model are the side panels and the tongue tag. 04. of 16.
Originally owned by brothers Paul and James Van Doren, Gordon Lee and Serge D’Elia, they manufactured custom shoes for the skate and surf community in Southern California. The shoes, simply known as Vans, became popular among the outdoor athletes in the region and sold for $2.49 to $4.99 in three different styles.
Note the green “plimsoll line” on this pair of Tretorns. The first plimsoll produced in the States came from the conglomeration of American rubber companies, U.S. Rubber, in 1916. They branded their product Keds as a simple trainer, available to do all the strenuous activity a leather sole just couldn’t.
